[Note added on 9-29-10: You can also do it wireless. PC has wireless connection to router. Router is connected to playstation through ethernet cable.]

This video shows that when the PS2 slim is connected to the PC with a crossover cable, you can play PS2 games stored on the PC hard drive (or external USB drive) and launch it from the PS2!

The advantage is that it is MUCH FASTER than using a USB hard drive connected directly to the PS2. The in game movies do not lag, and best of all, you save your laser!
